Stand Out from the Crowd: CV Tips from Our IT Recruitment Expert

Your CV is often your first introduction to a potential employer, so making a strong
impression matters.

With over seven years of experience in IT recruitment, Gerard Lunday, Head of IT
Recruitment at Venesky Brown, has reviewed and placed hundreds of candidates in
roles across the UK. He knows exactly what makes a CV catch a recruiter’s eye (and
what makes it miss the mark).|

Here are Gerard’s top tips to help your CV stand out for all the right reasons:

1. Tailor Your CV for Each Application
One size doesn’t fit all. Customise your CV to match the job description, highlighting
the skills and experience that are most relevant to the role you’re applying for.

2. Keep It Clear and Professional
A clean, consistent format makes a big difference. Use a simple font, clear headings,
and bullet points to make your CV easy to scan. Recruiters often review dozens of
applications, so the easier yours is to read, the better.

3. Keep It Concise
Aim for no more than two pages. Focus on your most recent and relevant
experience, cutting out unnecessary details. Every line should add value.

4. Focus on Achievements, Not Just Duties
Rather than listing what your job involved, highlight what you accomplished. For
example: “Implemented a new system that improved efficiency by 20%” sounds
much stronger than “Responsible for maintaining systems.”

5. Proofread — Then Proofread Again
Spelling or grammar mistakes can leave a poor impression. Always double-check
your CV, or better yet, ask someone else to review it with fresh eyes.

6. Don’t Forget the Basics
It sounds obvious but make sure your contact details are up to date and easy to find.

So, whether you’re starting your job search or refreshing your CV for your next big
move, follow these tips to make your application stand out from the crowd.
